Retrofit performance modelling for a Victorian home

Porthcawl Sandy Bay Coastal Scheme
Retrofit performance modelling for a Victorian home

We developed a full digital workflow for assessing a pre-1900s home. The work combined a 3D LiDAR scan, airtightness testing, and energy modelling to simulate two retrofit options — one industry-led and one led by our team using breathable materials and higher energy generation.

What was the impact?

By comparing performance, we identified which combinations of insulation, PV, battery storage, and tariff strategy best balanced operational cost, carbon, and comfort. The outcomes informed future retrofit designs for traditionally built homes.

Key Results

  • Over 85% energy and carbon reduction
  • At least £500 annual net income from efficient solar and battery use
  • Peak heat losses reduced by 70%+
  • Cold hours reduced from 73% to under 5% in key rooms

Techniques Used

  • LiDAR Scan to BIM (Leica BLK2GO, Cyclone Register, Revit)
  • Energy Modelling (PHPP, IES-VE, PV Sol)
  • Thermal Comfort Modelling using half hourly room-level data
  • PV and Battery Simulations with variable tariffs using in-house digital tools
